The story of MDS

Macarthur Disability Services (MDS) has been operating in the Macarthur Region for nearly thirty years. Originally developed in response to the 1981 “Year of the Disabled”, MDS has a history of identifying and responding to the needs of people with disabilities, their families and carers.

The organisation originally came into being through the establishment of the Disabled Persons Resource Centre and was known by its former name, the Macarthur and District Association for the Disabled.

The organisation has over the years attracted funding to provide a range of services for people with disabilities, frail aged and elderly people and their families who live in Macarthur. Some of these services are situated in Campbelltown and other parts of the Macarthur area. At the 1997 Annual General Meeting it was decided to change the name of the organisation to Macarthur Disability Services (MDS).

1999 saw a consolidation of and co location of most of its services under the one roof at 138 Queen Street in Campbelltown.

Since 1997 MDS has redeveloped its mission and structure. The organisational structure adopted has allowed the development of an efficient and effective service delivery model. This development is underpinned by careful planning with both Strategic and Operational Plans in place. The management of all services is centralised, and where appropriate housed centrally.

Growth and Development

MDS has a dynamic workforce able to respond quickly to changing circumstances, allowing us flexibility in service delivery that is responsive to changing needs. We currently employ over 200 full-time and part-time staff and some 50 casual staff with qualifications varying according to the role.

In April 2003, MDS received both ISO 9001-2000 as well as JAS-ANZ Quality Assurance accreditation for Disability funded services. In 2009 MDS received an upgrade to ISO 9001-2008 accreditation. In developing polices and procedures, MDS has ensured input from staff, service participants and their families.

The importance of planning has increased as MDS has grown. Clear directions have been set to ensure that MDS remains true to the organisation’s vision and continues to operate within our values.
