GET ACTIVE GOES OFF!!! The third annual Get Active Macarthur day presented by Macarthur Disability Services was an enormous success. The YMCA Minto Indoor Sports Centre buzzed with African drums, Arabic music, disco and hundreds of happy voices. The sound was the background to an exciting innovative community expo of sports and activities for people with a disability that were totally adaptable and inclusive. It was a day where school children from mainstream local schools, schools that specialise in disability and a range of service providers and disability organisations could come together to experience social and sporting activities created for every ability. La Voz Drumming held African drumming workshops with Hazels usual enthusiasm leading the group, Ali’s Angels belly danced the day away and Wendy from Circus Wow showed circus tricks to the delight of the crowd. MDS organised a real bowling lane from Interbowl Campbelltown, and the Australian Army Cadet Corp Band brought instruments for the kids to try. The Australian National Drag Racing Association revved up the event with some big engines whilst Campbelltown Performing Arts High School used peddle power with mono cycle ,unicycle and tricycle performers. They had jugglers, and some of the best local vocalists to entertain on the day too! Macquarie Fields Tafe students participated as part of their disability awareness training and their Sport & Fitness programs. The Department of Sport & Recreation brought along table games for people with high support needs and NSW Wheelchair Sports trucked out the road show. Telstra Rugby League pass the ball competitions, Boccia and Burn Rubber Burn from the Campbelltown PCYC made sure it was truly a full on day of experiences and activity. And when every one needed a well earned massage Replenish Skin + Body massaged those worked out muscles…It was a Jamm packed day. The day was outstanding from the point of view of attendance, activities and organisation, wall to wall smiling faces! MDS General Manager Anne Thorn was very positive “I’ve always believed in encouraging healthy lifestyles, sport and fitness for people with a disability, and Get Active showcases different opportunities, organisations and activities that cater for all abilities. The MDS staff have done a great job as a team and I’m so excited by the continued support from our sponsors.” One of the best quotes from the day came from Joyce, a mum that helped organise her son’s school to bring over 100 kids “I had a great time just watching the kids enjoy themselves so much. I could see both the children with disability and the one's without get right into it and were enjoying themselves so much.” MDS says the day is about breaking down barriers, raising awareness and having fun together, it looks like they are definitely on the right track! Call Steve on 0403 458 572 or email stephenw@mdservices.com.au . Just before I go I want to answer the question I get asked most about this event as an Inclusive event showcasing sports and activities for people with a disability. What Will Mainstream Kids Get Out Of This Event? Get Active Macarthur day was originally designed for kids with a disability, but because all of the sports are adaptable and inclusive they are accessible to ALL students. The idea of inviting mainstream students last year was to encourage integration and participation. We found this led to increased understanding and disability awareness; it was a unique way to bring about a “level playing field” which doesn’t exist often when it comes to disability. Just a few examples included Wheelchair users racing able bodied kids in racing wheelchairs, competing in wheelchair basketball together, playing Boccia or Ten Pin Bowling together, blind folded kids playing Blind Bingo with the vision impaired and blind, everyone doing Belly Dancing and generally having a fun day trying different sports and activities. Trying to bring about a more inclusive society may sound idealistic; even the need for the special education units in schools creates separatism. We have to cater for special needs so even that creates “a point of difference”, so we thought here is an opportunity for people with a disability to find more options for themselves regarding sports and activities. It is also an opportunity to invite other kids to experience options that they wouldn’t normally consider. It was also an encouraging day where some schools organised buddies from the main stream school community to join the day and become involved in the activities. There wasn’t that separatist feel of ”us & them”, it was INCLUSIVE. I’ve got to be honest it isn’t easily sold in the mainstream community. We‘ve had a lot of people ask why able bodied kids would want to go or be involved and that’s why we also developed the Jamm & Slamm Wheelchair basketball program in Macarthur High Schools. It’s a sport first and foremost, but it just happens to be played in a chair with wheels by both able bodied people and those that use a chair. It’s fast and exciting and nobody is excluded! Anyone can be involved, and that’s what we’re trying to push with Get Active: ANYONE can be involved. Although it’s showcasing adaptive sports and activities, students can broaden their horizons, develop empathy and understanding. Maybe through this we encourage future carers or young people to consider seeking employment in the rewarding disability sector or maybe it’s as simple as giving kids from all walks of life an opportunity to socialise. We believe mainstream classes and schools will benefit from shared experiences and the outcome will be the understanding that we are one community of people, regardless of disability, societal perception of ability, and that we all can learn from each other. I hope you’ll join us at Get Active this year, |
