| ON SUNDAY 8th of March Mt Annan Botanic Gardens again played host to the premier family event in the Macarthur region promoting healthy lifestyles and participation. Nearly 2000 walkers registered for the 6k Fun Walk and the 12k Race Walk making the 2009 CAMPBELLTOWN CITY CHALLENGE WALK another enormous success. The walk was officially recognised as Australia’s Number One Community Event in 2008, a tribute to Neil Walker and the efforts of Campbelltown City Council. Macarthur Disability Services is proud to be associated with the walk promoting social inclusion, integration and support of people with disability. This year the Walking Together motto Support Disability, Wear the Shirt, Walk the Walk was emblazoned on bright orange t-shirts that could be seen from space. Hundreds of shirts on wheelchair users and walkers really made a visual impact. Rob Doorey and Lyndal Rogers, the C91.3fm breakfast personalities, led the team joined by Win Radio GM Ryan Gracie and a swag of management and staff. “C91.3 really is in a league of its own when it comes to commercial radio stations and community commitment,” believes Steve Wisbey from MDS. “They genuinely put Macarthur First… and they’ve really been proactive in their support of people with disability. I can’t praise them and our amazing supporters like the Department of Ageing Disability and Home Care (DADHC), Telstra and Macarthur Square for financially supporting this event enough. They’ve all been awesome!” MDS General Manager Anne Thorn was excited by the hundreds of walkers that won MDS the Largest Team category 2nd year running. “To be amongst all those orange shirts supporting people with a disability and continuing to build positive community relationships really meant a lot to me,” says Anne. “It was also fantastic to have Sylvanvale Foundation CEO Pauline Stanley, her staff and service participants join us for the first time too, as well as many from last year including staff from DADHC, the Macarthur Disability Network, Eastern Respite from Maroubra, Wesley Mission, St Vincent de Paul Society, Macarthur Square and Telstra all contributing numbers to our team making this another special win. The hundreds of team members joining WALKING TOGETHER have continued to show that we are all important and valued members of the Macarthur community. They’ve really given me a positive lift. The acceptance and support of people with a disability is so important as we strive for our world to become more inclusive.” The Walking Together team was a great success in promoting support and inclusion. We would like to give thanks to everyone that joined our team especially DADHC, TELSTRA, MACARTHUR SQUARE LEND LEASE, C91.3FM, MAGIC EFFECTS DIGITAL (Stephen Rogan and his awesome video photography and production talents) and ALPROMOTE PROMOTIONAL PRODUCTS for their outstanding community support and disability awareness. |
